Technology & Politics
My research has dealt with issues including foreign influence operations targeting US elections, the supply of political messages by celebrities, the filter bubble hypothesis, and toxicity of political Facebook ads.
Which citizens are deeply skeptical of modern technology, and what are the consequences of anti-tech attitudes? Thomas Zeitzoff and I wrote a paper about this and I've been also interested in how people view AI-generated content.
Public opinion and political behavior
Do voters remember promises from candidates? Are young people disillusioned with democracy? When are groups electorally salient (explaining Trump support), and what are economic identities? What is the relative importance of identities, policy issues, and partisanship when people vote?
Conspiracy theories and disinformation
Do heavy users of social media believe more conspiracy theories? Can conspiratorial worldviews be explained by ideology? Beliefs in disinformation about the war in Ukraine in 19 countries are more prevalent among people who use social media to get their news, but the measured effect of social media depends on whether we take into account pre-existing mindsets and attitudes among citizens.
